Let's Light Up Christmas for those in Need

Join The Salvation Army and Kroc Center at our annual Red Kettle Kickoff. This year it is a festive Christmas Tree Lighting event. There will be music, lights, entertainment, cookies and cocoa, and the warmth of our community coming together. Dress for the weather, bring your Christmas Spirit, and let's ring in the largest fundraiser of the Marion-Polk Salvation Army, our Red Kettle drive.  Saturday 5PM November 27th

Christmas Tree Lighting Event

Let's ring in Christmastime at our Red Kettle Kick-off
Saturday November 27th 5PM - FREE - at the Salem Kroc Center

We will light up the Kroc Christmas Tree, and light up the holidays for people in need. This free family event will feature carols, a brass band, local celebrities, cookies, coffee and cocoa, and special guests.

In the past year, The Salvation Army of Marion and Polk counties served 50,000 meals to wildfire victims, distributed 15,500 gifts and toys to smiling children, and housed 13,950 people. The funds raised by Salvation Army bell ringers will make a year-round impact in our community through social services assistance, homeless shelters, disaster relief, children’s programs, rehabilitation services, anti-human trafficking, and more.

The Living Christmas Tradition

When you ring the bell you're making change happen, right here in Marion and Polk counties.

The Red Kettle Campaign was inspired by Salvation Army Cpt. Joseph McFee. In 1891, upset by many in San Francisco going hungry, he set out to provide them with a free Christmas dinner. Inspired by the “Simpson’s Pot” at Stage Landing where passers-by tossed coins to help the poor, McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing that read, “Keep The Pot Boiling”. He was soon able to feed 1,000 of the city’s poorest.

The Christmas tradition continues, with kettles in front of Salem and Keizer stores, as well as virtually. With COVID-19, we have taken this program virtual all round to clothe and shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, provide countless social service programs and after-school programs to help prevent the cycle of  homelessness, provide Christmas gifts for kids and seniors, promote financial stability, and lead those in need on a path to a healthy productive life.
